Barnet's Labour administration is considering halving general waste (black bin) collections from weekly to fortnightly. That would halve a service every household in the borough uses and pays for through their council tax.
Fortnightly collections mean overflowing bins, more fly-tipping, more foxes and vermin, and bad smells on our streets, especially in summer. Large families, people living in flats with shared bins, and residents who can't easily get to the tip would be hit hardest.
Barnet residents have faced increasing council tax rises under this Labour Council. They should not be asked to pay the same and get less. The council's budget pressures are real, but they should be dealt with through back-office savings and better management, not by cutting the basic services residents rely on most.
We, the undersigned, call on Barnet Council to:
- Rule out any reduction in the frequency of black bin collections.
- Commit to keeping weekly general waste collections for every household in the borough.
- Consult residents properly before making any changes to waste services.
