We, the undersigned residents of Barnet and Greater London, call on the Mayor of London and TfL to abandon proposals to introduce weight-based charges, higher parking permit fees, or daily levies targeting larger vehicles. Under the Vision Zero plan, TfL is exploring new charges on SUVs - a category so vaguely defined that it captures millions of ordinary family cars, including hatchbacks, estates, and people carriers. These measures, which could come into effect as early as 2026, would pile further costs onto families already burdened by ULEZ, rising Congestion Charge fees, and soaring fuel prices.
We object because these charges are unfair, arbitrary, and represent stealth taxation on working Londoners who have made lawful choices about the vehicles they own. Many families depend on larger cars to transport children, support elderly relatives, or carry essential equipment. These are necessities, not luxuries. Residents of Barnet and outer London have far fewer alternatives to car travel than those in inner-city areas. We therefore demand the immediate withdrawal of all such proposals, a genuine public consultation with outer London communities, and a full cumulative impact assessment before any new motoring charges are considered.
